Townsville short guide

Townsville (165,000 inhabitants in 2008) located at the northeast coast of Australia – in the state of Queensland. It was founded in 1864 – and is primarily known as the city with 320 days of sunshine a year.

Right in the center is the 290 meter high Castle Hill, and from here you have a wonderful view over the city and suburbs – and one can also look to the archipelago Magnetic Islands, which are the area’s most famous national park. Otherwise cityscape dominated by the 2 km long The Strand, with its very popular and beautiful beach – which also is located right in the center. It is inter alia also a large play area for children. There is otherwise a number of inviting beaches in and around Townsville.

Townsville is otherwise a paradise for divers, both professional and amateur – and there are organized daily trips to the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, which lies off the coast of Queensland. Great Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – as does the rainforest areas in Townsville, where there are several national parks.

Airport Townsville Airport is located 12 km west of downtown.
