Torremolinos Short Guide
Torremolinos is a municipality on the Costa del Sol of the Mediterranean, just west of the city of Málaga, in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of the Costa del Sol Occidental. A poor fishing village before the growth in tourism beginning in the late 1950s, Torremolinos was the first of the Costa del Sol resorts to develop. It is located on the western shore of the Bay of Málaga and behind the Sierra de Mijas. It is located at a distance of 13 km from Malaga and is served by motorway A-7, which bypasses the city to the north, and by train.In 2010 it had 66,957 inhabitants, and is the sixth largest city in the province. Township has an area of 20 km ² and a population density of 3,153.85 inhabitants / km ², which is multiplied during the summer months. It is very popular with British tourists and has a large British expatriate population. In the past the influx of younger British tourists has caused controversy. Areas of the city is dominated by high-rise development. In addition to its tourism sector, Torremolinos is known locally for its vibrant nightlife, particularly its numerous bars and clubs catering to the LGBT community.
Torremolinis was once just a tiny fishing village and now it has grown into a huge, resort town, perhaps the most popular in the Mediterranean. It is located 8km from Malaga and has long sandy beaches and a whole host of shops, bars and restaurants. In the summer it becomes a bustling tourist resort but out of season it takes on a more Spanish atmosphere, more relaxing and welcoming.
Paseo Maritimo, the seafront promenade extents along Playamar to La Carihuela and is a lovely walk with great sea views and some dramatic rock formations. The fishing village of La Carihuela has many of its original cottages and offers a more traditional atmosphere. There are some excellent seafood restaurants and beach bars (chiringuitos) here.
The central Plaza Costa del Sol is a good starting point for exploring the town. There are not many historical buildings left in Torremolinos but in the old part of town you can find the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and the Casa de los Navaja. The most important symbol of the towns heritage is the Torre de Pimentel or Torre de los Molinos, a defensive tower which gives the city its name.
Away from the beach are several public gardens where you can take advantage of the shade and wander amongst the exotic plants. If you prefer to get out of town there are three forests on the outskirts with freshwater springs to explore.
Torremolinos is fameous for its more lively nights out with spots like Pueblo Blanco or La Nogalera drawing visitors who want to party into the night amongst the glitzy bars, clubs and casinos. The official name of the airport in Malaga’s Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport and the airport is approximately 7 km north of Torremolinos.
