Traffic and Driving Tips Montenegro

Only a visitor, who has a valid European Union driver license or a driving license and International driving permit issued by non-European Union country, has a right to drive the motor-car in Montenegro.

Speed Limits for cars:

– in built up areas – 50 km/h
– outside built up areas – max 80 km/h
– on motorways – max 100 km/h
– on highways – max 130 km/h

– in built up areas – max 50 km/h

– on other roads – max 90 km/h

Rules to know:

The permitted blood alcohol limit is 0.05%.

Traffic moves on the right-hand side.
The minimum driving age is 18 years.
Seat belts are obligatory for drivers and all passengers in the front and rear seats.
Vehicles entering a roundabout always have right of way.
Using dipped headlights is mandatory at all times while driving.

It is not permitted to use mobile phone while driving even with hands-free device.

Children under 12 years are not permitted to be redden in the front seat. Children under 5 years must be ridden in special child-seats.
It is not permitted to overtake a school bus when it is stopped and children are boarding or alighting.
At a junction, vehicles on the right have right of way.

It is obligatory to have in a car a warning triangle, reflecting waistcoat, first-aid kit, set of spare lamps (is not required for xenon and neon lamps), winter tires from 15 November to 1 April. Except winter tires it is necessary to have in a car snow chains.
A locally valid insurance is mandatory.

Montenegro doesn’t have toll roads. Only, thoroughfare through Sozin’s tunnel and the ferry in the Bock-Kotorsky gulf are subjects to payment.

In a built up area, to pass another vehicle a driver should sound car’s horn.

Anybody driving in Montenegro may be required to produce the following documents if stopped at road by police officers: a valid diver license (for foreign citizens also – International driving permit), car registration document, and insurance policy.
Montenegro accepts EU “Green Card” insurance. Local insurance is required for longer stays.
In Montenegro, most roads are two-lane only.
