Karlovac is 50 kilometers southwest of the capital Zagreb. Karlovac is situated on the river Kupa, in northwest Croatia. The city has 60,000 inhabitants. Three rivers, Korana, Mreznica and Kupa, runs through town, and a fourth, Dobra is just outside.

Karlovac was founded in 1579 as a fortress against the Turks, and has developed into an important trade center. The city is also previously known as Karlstadt.
