Kajaani is in the province Kainuu, rather in the middle of Finland (midway between the two large lakes Oulujärvi and Nuasjärvi). The city has approximately 38,000 inhabitants (2007), and was founded in 1651 around the fortress Kajaneborg (1604) – which is still Kaja Anis’s most famous attraction.

One of Finland’s most popular ski resorts – Vuokatti – is about 35 km southwest of Kajaani. Here is also a 1250 m long ski tunnel, where it is possible to ski all year round.

Airport Kajaani Airport is about 7 km northwest of downtown. From there, there are daily flights to the capital Helsinki.
