Helsingoer short guide

The port city of Helsingoer is located north of Sealand in Capital Region. The city itself has about 35,000 inhabitants, while the whole municipality’s population is almost double. Elsinore is located at the narrowest part of the Øresund, and you can take a car ferry over to Helsingborg in Scania (Sweden). The stretch Elsinore – Helsingborg is just 4 km, and the crossing takes approx 20 minutes.

Elsinore has many tourist attractions and the most famous is Kronborg Castle – a Renaissance palace from the 1500s which is beautifully situated at the approach to the Øresund. Kronborg Castle is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list and has 200,000 visitors annually.

Other popular attractions include Carmelite Monastery – Scandinavia’s best preserved monastery and St. Olai Church – the oldest building in 1559 (where the oldest parts of the church stems from the 1200s). Many tourists also visit the art museum Louisiana, Øresund Aquarium and Denmark’s Technical Museum.

Nearest airport is Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup – located approx 50 km south of Helsingor center.
