Heidelberg is located in the southwestern part of Germany, and belongs to the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The city has 145,000 inhabitants (2008), and has a beautiful location on the banks of the Neckar River, which flows into the Rhine at the town of Mannheim – 22 km northwest of Heidelberg. The city has a rich cultural life with over 20 museums and art galleries – and a sculpture park – and is known for its annual classical music festival “Heidelberger Frühling”.
Heidelberg was founded in 1386 and is known for its charming old town – “Altstadt”. It also “Alte Brücke” – an old stone bridge from 1786 with Baroque tower helmets. One of the city’s main tourist attractions is the Heidelberg Castle, where the oldest part is from 1294. The castle – which is also located in the old city – has since received several additions in different styles, and is surrounded by a beautiful park.
Other attractions in Heidelberg are bl. a. “Karlstor” (one triumphal arch from 1775), “Heidelberger Kunstverein” (an exhibition of international contemporary art), district Bergheim (which lies west of the old town – originally a historic village) Holy Spirit Church from the 1300s, Jesuit Church from 1712 – and Heidelberg Zoo.
