Dresden lies on both sides of the river Elbe, in the eastern part of Germany – and is main town in the state of Saxony. The city has 505,000 inhabitants (2008) and is an important road and rail hub. The distance to the Czech border is just 47 km.

On the south side of the river is the Altstadt – Old Town where most tourist attractions are located. The famous park facility Grosser Garten from the 1600s is a major tourist attraction and contains botanisk- and zoological garden, open-air stage, miniature railway and lake. There are also ruins of garden palace from 1678 and a mosaic fountain.
On the north side of the river is Neustadt – New Town, which is the city’s business district.
Zwinger Palace is a popular attraction in Dresden. The castle is originally from the 1700s, and has pavilions, galleries, museums and art collections. Other tourist attractions in the city: Opera building from 1878 desde Castle from the 1700s, the cathedral “Katolische Hofkirche” from the 1700s and the Frauenkirche with its huge golden dome – originally from the 1700s, but was destroyed during the 2nd World War and rebuilt in the period 1993-2006.
The city’s international airport – Dresden Airport – located 10 km north of downtown.
