Bochum was founded in the 1300s, and currently has several historical attractions. On the north bank of the river Ruhr are two medieval castle and the town’s oldest church – “Prospectuses Church St. Peter und Paul” – has many visitors. The church as it stands today was built in 1547 – on the ruins of a much older church that burned down in 1517.
Bochum is known for its Mining Museum, located north of downtown. This mining museum is also a popular tourist attraction – with 400,000 visitors annually.
Other sights in the city are among others City Hall from 1931 Jernbanemuseet (in the district Dahlhausen), Schauspielhaus Bochum – one of the largest and most prestigious theaters in Germany, the city’s Planetarium.
Kunstmuseet “Bochum Museum” is also worth a visit – with its great collection of German art after 1945, and international art from the 1900s.
The nearest airport is Dortmund Airport, located 30 km east of Bochum.
