Marbella Short Guide
Marbella is a city and municipality in the south of Spain, belonging to the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is part of the region of Costa del Sol, and is the headquarters of the Association of municipalities in the region, there is also the head of the judicial district that bears its name.Marbella is located on the Mediterranean Sea, between Malaga and Gibraltar -stredet, at the foot of Sierra Blanca. The municipality covers an area of 117 square kilometers (45 sq mi) crossing of highways on the coast, which is the main entrances. In 2012 the population of the city was 140,473 inhabitants, making it the second most populous municipality in the province of Málaga and the eighth in Andalusia. It is one of the main tourist towns on the Costa del Sol, and throughout most of the year, is an international tourist attraction, mainly because of its climate and tourist infrastructure. The city also has a significant archaeological heritage, several museums and performance spaces, and a cultural calendar of events ranging from reggae concerts to opera performances.
Golden Mile is a stretch of luxury yachts and exclusive restaurants and hotels But Marbella is more than just diamonds that shines from celebrity tanned wrist. The city’s treat is the well-preserved old town that bears little signs of tourism. Orange Square (Placa de los Naranjos) is a cozy area with plazas and cafes. Adjacent is the church Iglesia de Nostra Senora de la Encarnacion from the 1500’s with Grabado museum as a neighbor.
The most charming area in Marbella is the old quarter, with narrow cobblestone streets and Arabic houses, centred on the Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square) which is located just off the main street, and also home to the 16th century town hall. Here there is a mix of stately buildings, small shops, galleries, bars and restaurants and it is a lively meeting place at any time of the day. With the trees in bloom there is a beautiful mix of colours here, with the exotic plants set against the white buildings and blue sky.
Throughout Marbella, narrow streets, homes and shops intermingle to create the atmosphere of a small village and another popular meeting place is La Alameda in the centre of town. Several historical sites of interest include the Bonsai Museum, Municipal Art Gallery, Roman Villa and Baths and Marbella Mosque.
The classy Perto Banus area, just west of the town is the place to be pampered; sit aside the luxury yachts in the marina; relax in one of the many bars and restaurants or browse the windows of the world renowned fashion houses and boutiques. This area comes alive at night and on the weekend next to the bullring there is a bustling market where you can pick up a variety of bargains.
The Avienda del Mar is one of the most delightful promenades on the costa and another place to indulge in the classy restaurants and bars. Try traditional fish and seafood dishes like sardines on a spit, fried fish and the incomparable paella. If you prefer to get away from the glitz of the seafront restaurants there are many backstreet bars where you can try tapas.
Nearest airport is in Malaga with bus service to Marbella.
