Foreign drivers can drive in Spain with their National driving permits and International driver licenses no longer than six months. After this term, foreigners must obtain Spanish driver licenses.
Non-residents can apply for tourist registration plates; this allows foreigners to drive in Spain with their registration plates for six months per year (for private using only). In the case of the first offence, visitors will be given five days to start the car registering process. Customs will be informed. In the case of the second offence outside of those five days, if visitors don’t have proof of the registry process has started he/she will be fined. Customs will be informed and the vehicle will be taken to your residence and clamped.
Speed Limits:
– on motorways – max 120 km/h, min 60 km/h
– on dual carriageways – 100 km/h
– on single carriageway roads – 90 km/h
– in cities and towns – 50 km/h.
Rules to know:
– Blood alcohol levels are 0.5 mg of alcohol per millilitre of blood, 0.3 for new drivers.
– Driver license, ownership or rental car documents, and insurance (third-party insurance) must be carried while driving.
– Minimum driving age is 18 years.
– Seat belts are worn by drivers and all passengers in front and back seats.
– Two warning triangles and reflective vests for all occupants must be in any car all the time; they must be used in case of accident or car problems.
– First-aid kit and fire extinguisher are recommended
– Drivers must aid accident victims if they are the first on the scene.
– Cell phone may only be used with hand free device, but it is not allowed to have earpiece attachments.
– Using of screen-based navigation systems is prohibited.
– Children under 12 years of age must sit in the back seats of a car.
– Children and babies must use appropriate (age, weight) safety seats.
– Headlamp converters are required.
– Replacement bulb set is recommended.
