Temuco short guide

Temuco is a Chilean city located in the southern part of the country, about 270 km south of Concepcion. The town is located between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the east, and the river Cautín runs through the center. Temuco belong Araucanía region named after the Mapuche Indian language, and the city is their cultural center. Temuco was founded in 1881 and today there live about 240 000 inhabitants here (2008). Metropolitan area has a population of over 260 000 (2002), making the area to the south of Chile’s second largest.

Temuco is the right place to visit if you want to learn more about the Mapuche Indians who is Chile’s indigenous population. Here is the market Mercado Municipal where you can buy traditional Mapuche goods. In the prior Alemania Avenue is partly Museo Regional de la Araucanía concerning Mapuche Indians. Pablo Neruda National Railway Museum is devoted to the old steam locomotives and named after the famous, Chilean poet.

Maquehue Airport is about 5 km outside the city center and offers domestic flights.
