Santiago de Chile is the capital of Chile and has a central location in the country. The town lies to the east of the elongated country and its ports are the cities of San Antonio and Valparaiso. River Mapocho runs through town and meets the Pacific Ocean in the west. Santiago is the largest city in the country with a population of over 4.8 million (2009). Pedro de Valdivia founded the city under Spain in 1541, and Santiago was selvstedig in 1817.

Although Santiago is almost 500 years old, it is today a very modern city. Santiago is full of contrasts with skyscrapers and lush parks side by side, and high, snow-capped mountains that surround the green valley. Big city offers everything from restaurants and bars to entertainment venues and famous buildings, like the presidential palace La Moneda. Visitors can choose from many museums, including the Museo Historico Nacional and art museum Museo de Solidaridad Salvador Allende.

Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport offers flights to almost the entire world and is about 25 km outside the city.
